Consequences of Non-Expository Preaching
- It usurps the authority of God over the mind and the soul (Lecture 1, 6:45).
- It usurps the Lordship of Christ over His church (Lecture 1, 9:35).
- It hinders the work of the Holy Spirit (Lecture 1, 14:29).
- It demonstrates pride and a lack of submission to Scripture (Lecture 1, 26:46).
- It severs the preacher personally from the regular, sanctifying work of Scripture (Lecture 1, 34:30).
- It removes spiritual depth and transcendence from the people, crippling worship (Lecture 1, 42:27).
- It prevents the preacher from fully developing the mind of Christ, critical to his work (Lecture 1, 52:09).
- It depreciates, by example, the spiritual duty and priority of personal Bible study (Lecture 2, 3:30).
- It prevents the preacher from being the voice of God on every issue of his time (Lecture 2, 15:51).
- It breeds a congregation as weak and indifferent to the glory of God as the preacher is (Lecture 2, 22:28).
- It robs people of their only true source of help (Lecture 2, 29:37).
- It puts the responsibility on the preacher to change people (Lecture 2, 34:04).
- It reduces the preacher’s words to the level of everyone else’s words (Lecture 2, 44:44).
- It portrays an attitude of self love, rather than loving the Lord will all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Lecture 2, 48:28).
- It creates a destructive disconnect between sound doctrine and life (Lecture 2, 49:53).
- It eliminates the truths that trouble, offend, and terrify the lost and sinful. (Lecture 3, 15:57)
- It disconnects God’s people from the legacy of the past. (Lecture 3, 25:20)
- It removes protection from error deadly to the church. (Lecture 3, 34:05)
- It gives no assurance that people have heard from heaven. (Lecture 3, 45:09)
